World Robot Games (International) 2017

From the National-level competition and onto the International stage, our Robotics @GreendaleSec took part in the World Robot Games (International) 2017, hosted by our country Singapore, on Friday (10 November) and Saturday (11 November). Not only did they participate in the SUMO Robot Showdown 1kg (Junior) Category, but also in the Battle Ballz (Open) Category:

We won the Bronze Award for it, after rounds of intense competition which included a University team from Thailand! And that’s not all: the best part is our only participating team beat them, fair and square, as their robots looked huge and intimidating!

For the SUMO Category, two of our three participating teams managed to get in the Top 8, and one of them came in 4th position!

On the overall, our school was awarded the Country Best Award for the exceptional performance during the competition!

Let’s congratulate the following teams, for these amazing accomplishments:

Team Battle Ballz

Jedd Laurance and Nabil Hussain (of 2E2), Lee Mingxuan and Javier Lee (of 2E3), and Kavinesh (of 3T1)

Team SUMO

Theodore Ong (of 2E1), Maxwell Timothy (of 2E2), Odelia Chua and Shermaine Yeoh (of 2E4)

We would also like to congratulate and thank Mr Abdul Rahman, Mr Yusoff, and Mr Tan Hee Lam for their tireless effort and help, prior to and, during the competition, the OSOs for accommodating the work done for it through the late evenings, and last but not the least, our D&T Head, Mr Chang, and the School Leaders for their utmost support.

Well done Team Robotics @GreendaleSec!

Young Engineer Award (Gold)

We are pleased to announce that eight of our students, from the Robotics @GreendaleSec, are awarded the “Young Engineer Award (YEA) Gold”!

With this, it recognises their active participation in the Future Transportation Challenge which they took part in June this year. Quoting a letter from the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (Singapore Polytechnic):

“During the course of the challenge, they have demonstrated a creative and innovative mind, which are important attributes of an engineer in making our world a better place.”

The YEA Gold also gives the students an added advantage when applying for SP engineering courses, as well as the Early Admission Exercise (EAE)! Let’s give them a round of applause for this amazing achievement, and a pat on their backs if you happen to see them around in school!

WRG (Singapore) 2017 Sumobot Winner, Lim Yuheng, and Theodore Ong (of 2E1),

Our WRG (Singapore) 2017 Sumobot Winners:

Odelia Chua and Shermaine Yeoh (of 2E4),

and last but not the least, our dear Kavinesh (of 3T1).

Congratulations to all!

Congratulations Chew Tze Han and Lim Yuheng (of 2E1), and Odelia Chua and Shermaine Yeoh (of 2E4) for winning the two awards respectively! Well done!

It was, by no means, an easy feat. The competition is purely autonomous based (of having the freedom to act independently), so the robots must be programmed to function in ways without any human intervention during the game!

The students, under the guidance of their passionate DTE teacher, Ms Elizabeth Ong, carefully designed the two robots prior to the competition, and pre-programmed them with a few possible strategies, which they eventually selected the “best one” for each at the start of the game. And boy, did it turn out well!

Congratulations Team Robotics @GreendaleSec!
