Learning journey to Brunei

Staff and students of Greendale Secondary School embarked on a MOE initiated exchange programme to Brunei from 21 Nov to 24 Nov 2018.

Sea Expedition (SeaEx) 2018

On 7 July 2018, our students from various CCA groups (ODAC, Canoeing, NPCC & Student Leadership) set out for a Kayaking Expedition, the second running of its kind since 2017. Accompanied by the teachers from the LLP committee, the weather was perfect, as the 18 students departed from Sembawang Beach towards Pasir Ris Beach. Along the 12 km route, they had to paddle strongly against the currents and pounding waves.

Upon reaching the destination at pasir ris beach, the students built their tents and prepared for dinner.

The next morning of 8 July 2018, the students were awaken by the sunrise at 7 AM. They began packing up and had their breakfast, followed by a short lesson by Mr Halim on how to plan a sea expedition, and considering factors like tide table and earth movements. At 8.30 AM, they set off towards Punggol jetty, paddling towards their destination in about 90 mins. Upon arrival, they loaded the canoes and made their way back to school.

We wish Raqin all the best!

Greendale Chorale Gold (Orientale Concentus 11)

Evocation 2018

On 2 June 2018, Greendale Chorale took part in Evocation 2018, a concert organised by EVOKXEVOKX is a young adult choir who seeks to involve youth in choral production while raising awareness of social causes.

In Evocation 2018, 5 choirs, including Greendale Chorale, came together to help raise funds for Community Health Assessment Team, a national outreach programme under the Institute of Mental Health. We had a great time learning from other choirs and performing the finale item, Omnia Sol (Let Your Heart Be Staid), with everyone!

Orientale Concentus 11

Greendale Chorale took part in Orientale Concentus 11 on 2 July 2018, held at SOTA Concert Hall. In this international competition, choirs from all over the world came to compete for the grand prize of $20,000!

We saw choirs from all over South East Asia, as well as from China, Taiwan and South Korea.

In our category, we faced off quality choirs from Philippines, Indonesia and other secondary school choirs from Singapore. We are proud to announce that of the six choirs in our category, only 2 were awarded Gold and we are one of them!

It was an amazing experience as we managed to invite one of the adjudicators to come to our school to conduct a masterclass for us. We also had the opportunity to listen to the winners of all the different categories on 4 July in Esplanade Concert Hall. Indeed, with these learning experiences, we aim to do our best for SYF next year!

The Greendale Docents – Humanities Week 2018

In Term 2, our Greendale docents also took on the role of being Humanities ambassadors during the Humanities Week. The Humanities week showcased how all the humanities subjects – History, Geography and Social Studies – are related to one another, and also allowed our Greendale students to learn beyond the classrooms. The docents were given opportunities to hone their public speaking skills through being presenters of the various events, as well as facilitators for the activities planned for the week.

Apart from helping out in the Humanities week, our docents also started to conceptualise and plan their very own heritage trail that will be conducted by the end of the year. The docents were given the task of selecting a heritage area to research and brainstorm for possible sites to include in their trail.

Do look forward to the trails that our docents have planned!

The Greendale Docents – Balestier Heritage Trail

In Phase 2 of the Greendale Docents Programme, the docents went on a heritage trail led by their very own teachers to the heritage site of Balestier. Our docents had an extremely fruitful and insightful experience learning about the changes and continuities of businesses in Balestier from past to present. Our docents were also able to see for themselves how History exists in their daily lives, waiting to be uncovered and shared.

Our docents interviewing the caretaker of the Shaw Brothers Malay Film Studios.

Through this experience, our docents were also able to reflect on how they would like to conduct their own heritage trail by the end of the programme.

Do keep a lookout for future updates of our docents as they embark on the research of various heritage sites in Singapore!

Honours Day 2018 & Eladneerg II Highlights

We present you the video highlights of the school’s Honours Day 2018 and Eladneerg II The Musical events, held on Friday, 6 April 2018, at the Singapore University of Technology & Design (SUTD):

Please enjoy!

Science Explorer Camp!

About 60 Secondary 1 and 2 students, in the Greendale Scientist Programme (GSP), participated in the Applied Materials Science Explorer Camp, held at United World College South East Asia (UWCSEA) this year. This camp is supported by the North East Community Development Council (NECDC). The programme is a collaboration between NECDC and Applied Materials South East Asia Pte Ltd to inspire and spark off interest in children with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). It aims to promote innovative thinking through Science workshops and hands-on experiments that could further their learning in Science.

This year, students learnt the science behind up-cycling and understand the circuitry in battery-operated toys. Working in groups of 4 or 5, the students repaired and used their newly acquired soldering skills to creatively use discarded toys to build their own mini-robots to compete in a robot challenge.

The HuManiacs “Greendale Docents” 2018!

The Greendale Docents Programme was launched in January this year, where selected Secondary 2 and 3 History students were invited to join the programme. This is an initiative from the Humanities Department (otherwise proudly known as The HuManiacs!) as part of our Talent Development Plan. The programme aims to guide our students to become critical thinkers and confident speakers, who are able to spread their interest and love for History to their peers.

In phase one of the programme, our docents were engaged in a series of public speaking activities to build up their confidence. The first two sessions saw our docents putting their creative juices to use, as they came up with fictional life stories of their friends, as well as a fictional holiday they imagined to have gone on. In the third session, docents had to select an item from their wallet to discuss the significance of the item in their lives.

Through these experiences, not only have our students become more confident in speaking in front of a crowd, they also learnt about their role as ambassadors of History in sharing stories to people around them.

More updates on the Greendale Docents Programme will be provided in subsequent blog posts! Stay tuned!
